Travelog 1: Nanga Kesit Longhouse, Lubuk Antu Sarawak – by Saiful Nang

As early as 7am in the morning, I checked out from the hotel. Harbour View hotel located near the waterfront. A moderate stay for RM120 per night. Consider a good hotel with that price. Aki (Our guide) arrived earlier than 7am. The participants came 1 by 1. It was about 1 hour plus from Kuching to Serian, the place we had our breakfast. In the picture (from left) Mat, Andy, Putat and Sani. The food was cheap!

This is another shop between Serian to Seri Aman. That’s where we shopped for the kids at the longhouse. Moreless like a token to them. Aki is the left most. He’s a good guide and also in love with photography.

Next to the shop above, we stopped to refuel the car. Woww, yang ni memang oldskool habesss. Guna pump manual dan pakai tong macam ni. The price of the fuel also a little higher here. After this scene, everyone moved into the car and fell asleep and woke up at the jetty. Lalu jugak sungai2 yang popular macam Sungai Batang Lupar. Popular with the tales of “Bujang Senang” (Legendary Croc)

Ni dah sampai kat Jetty. Not so jetty lah since the boat landed at the riverbank. There are few colourfull boats over there. We occupied 2 for 8 of us. 2 boatman for each. However, I realize the villagers was using the normal boat without those striking colours. Perhaps, those colourful boat meant for the tourist lah kot.

That’s Sani tgh cari port. Dia pilih join rumah kuning. It was around 12.30pm. We just took our own sweet time to go there. Nothing to rush. During the high tide (during rainy season), the water level in this river will be 2-3 meters higher. This time, the water level is just nice.

For this thin longboat, they have to have 2 boatman. 1 head & 1 tail. The engine controlled by 1 man and because the boat is long, then another 1 operator is needed. Without them, the boat might end-up hitting riverstone. Especially during low tide. The journey to the longhouse took another hour upstream. Approximately about 5km journey through the river. I amazed with the landscapes.

This is one of the scenery. A few suspension bridges throughout the route to Nanga Kesit Longhouse.

Then finally arrived. From left; Aki, Putat, Iskandar, Zamrin, Mat, Sani & Andy. Saiful Nang takde dia ambik gambar ni. Once arrived… I saw this…..

And this what make me tempted…i grabbed my lens bag and straight away to the river….

TEACHER’S DAY SPECIAL – BEST TEACHER AWARD

We never know, this is the last one. Else, we might end-up taking thousand and thousand more of her pictures.

Ayah saya pula sekolah sampai darjah 6. Tapi sekolah kampung dan cuma tahu mengira dan membaca (sikit2 sgt) dan tak pernah belajar arts. Tapi semasa saya kecik dulu2, dia pernah ajar saya melukis. Semasa darjah 4 saya dah menang pertandingan melukis peringkat sekolah mengalahkan peserta darjah 6. Dan masa tingkatan 1 saya menang pertandingan melukis peringkat kebangsaan anjuran ICI Agrochemicals. Masa tu penyampaian hadiah kat KL (macam org tak pernah nampak KL masa tu). Saya dapat no. 15 kebangsaan. Cuma 15 org sahaja yg dapat hadiah (no.1-15) maknanya saya yg terakhir. Bagaimanapun, saya yg termuda masa tu.

2 wanita penting dalam hidup saya. My wife left and my late mother right (Photo by Adi Nang)

Orang tua kata “Bagai ibu ketam mengajar anaknya berjalan lurus”. Saya kurang bersetuju kalau itu dikatakan mustahil. Memang mak tak ajar ABC sampai pandai membaca.

“Kalau malas belajar nanti kerja macam ayah, masuk ladang sawit bawak galah panjang2”.

Untuk pengetahuan semua, saya dah masuk ladang sawit seawal umur 6 tahun. Kerja berat dalam ladang sawit sehingga berumur 15 tahun (sebelum saya masuk ke sekolah berasrama). Saya tahu keperitan hidup macam tu. Even saya sendiri pun tak tahan dan tak mahu jadi macam tu.

Orang lain bersekolah 5 hari seminggu, tapi saya bersekolah hanya 3-4 hari seminggu. Memang tertinggal pelajaran tapi boleh catch-up semula. Semasa PMR, saya score 5A. Pada masa tu yg terbaik di sekolah (Sekolah kampung jer mmg senang jadi yg terbaik). Bila masuk sekolah baru dgn keputusan tu, saya shock pasal rata2 semua score 7-8As.

1st semester di sekolah baru saya tak menyerlah sangat. Saya rasa rendah diri sangat. Sampai balik cuti semester emak cakap…

JB-Bera dah kira long distance call.

Tak seperti kami, peluang perlu diburu bukan ditunggu. Teringat kata2 emak 2-3 bulan sblm meninggal…

“Alhamdulillah semua anak2 emak dah berjaya, jaga adik kat universiti tu. Sekarang kalau emak nak pejam mata pun mak dah lega semua anak2 emak takkan susah macam emak lagi…”

Last night my father in law balik dari Bangkok. My mother in-law pun cikgu juga. Same as my father in law (dulu dia cikgu juga sebelum dia kerja jaga cikgu2). Dia balik Malaysia untuk attend Sambutan Hari Guru. Jauh disudut hati saya, saya teringat semula…siapakan guru saya?

A Glance in Sarawak – The Making

Jadi kesian jugak boat ni takleh lari laju. Sampai part cetek kena lah champion2 ni turun tolak sama. Journey masuk ke Nanga Kesit Longhouse just took 1 hour boat ride upstream. It was amazing landscapes all the way from the jetty to the longhouse. U dont feel like an hour on the boat. Turun boat jer bersemut2 bontot dan kaki pun naik cramp. Owhhh…i feel like a fatman (in fact I am huhuhu…more time in gym after this)

Turun dari boat, terlalu excited nak ambik gambar. Put all the bags at the guesthouse lounge and grabbed my lens bag and my camera. Once we landed, we saw a few villagers (Ibanese) and their children ran to the river. That’s why I was so excited. Not because I want to see the Iban babes bathed at the river, but excited to photograph those kids demonstrated their best skills in “Terjun Tiruk” (Somersault). Wait till the full entry. There I’ll show u the pictures.

Then after checked-in at the guesthouse and had our late lunch at the riverside (Makan makanan dalam buluh style orang Iban sodaaappp) then we moved to the longhouse. I’ve been introduced to Tuai Rumah that afternoon. Aki (our guide) know most of the key people over there. And that made me feel confidence to treat the longhouse just like my own house (but i couldn’t find the fridge). Gambar ni masa ambik angle sampai this kapak man takut nak kapak kayu takut kena my camera.

Ini tengah berbual dgn sorang villager. Apai ni paling peramah jugak lah, walaupun saya boleh faham 30% shj apa yg dia cakap. They are quite modern actually. Apai yg tak pakai baju tu anak dia umur 15 tahun dah study kat Hong Kong then worked in USA. Now his son dah jadi structure engineer yang pernah sama2 buat Petronas Twin Tower. I convinced! (Goshh…I looked so BIG in this picture. Relatively bigger than another 2 folks)

Antara yang tertinggal kat rumah panjang selepas tarian najat dan acara minum tuak (saya tak tahan bau, apa lagi nak minum. Tapai pun tak makan, nak minum air tapai lagi lahhhh). From left Iskandar, yg hensem tu SN, Zamrin (tokey besar gambar kawin di Kuching) dan Sani. Ni yg kita berdiri ni kat Ruai Rumah aka Common Hall di antara corridor dgn rumah mereka. Right in front of us ada 6 human skulls aged over 50 years. 5 of them chopped by Apai Surin (in the last picture in this entry)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3127/2491360991_8c2f5cda8f.jpg

Started from a little argument of taking pictures at the school without any written permission (verbal pun tak, main terjah jer), turned to a friendly discussion on photography and his (Cikgu Aging, Guru Besar) interest in educating the Ibanese children. Zamrin kat belakang tu ambik kesempatan ambik gambar sambil saya mengalih perhatian guru besar sekolah supaya mereka tidak dimarahi untuk mengambil gambar kanak2 iban yang bersekolah kat situ (Chesss…saya yg kurang gambar psal jadi subjek menarik perhatian guru besar heheheh)

Don’t be surprise, this man Apai Surin has chopped 5 heads in 40s era. He even chopped his elder brother’s head after he encountered that his brother supplied information to both British & Japan during Brooke’s reign. Next to him, the cock won a few bets worth more than RM50k. I’ll bring some closer look on his tattoo later. 1 tattoo at his finger signifies 1 head chopped. In the Nanga Kesit Longhouse community, he’s the only one still alive with his legend of THE HEAD HUNTER!

COMING SOON

Touched down last night at LCCT. It was about 4 days experience in Sarawak. A place that I never visited before. It was fantastic trip. The time i walked out from the arrival hall, KFK (Kelab Fotografi Kenyalang) really made me feel like a celebrity. With a few people great me and a photographer busy in taking some angles.

Kudos to KFK for organising the workshop. It was a wonderful one. More than that, I only told Zamrin (The Vice-President of KFK) that I was interested to find an original longhouse (not in Cultural Village) but he came out with a superb plan already. I went to about 4 hours road trip to Lubuk Antu. Then we took an hour boat ride upstream. With all the pictures taken, I’ll create a travelog for all the readers.

Photography Workshop in Kuching by KFK (Kelab Foto Kenyalang)

The workshop has been organised by Kelab Fotografi Kenyalang, an association registered in Kuching. KFK is the most active photography association in East Malaysia.

During amali session. Depan tu yg pegang lens putih dgn perut “slim” tu saya. When a lot of them suggested a few beautiful places (e.g Waterfront & Museum) then I decided to go to the “Back Alley” and a row of old buildings. Which for me, good photographs should derived from a good direction and moment instead of beautiful background. There, they’ve been trained to observe colours, lines, textures, lighting, perspective and other elements in creating almost perfect images (if not perfect)

Before the practical session, bagi briefing kepada semua dulu. It’s not easy to handle 30++ participants walk in a group without a proper guidance & plan. Then after that, we walked for a distance about 1.5km around Kuching city. Baju oren tu Zamrin, Vice President KFK,with vest Abg Din and Endy kat belakang baju hitam.

Aksi saya semasa buat demo macammana nak communicate dgn couple semasa wedding portraiture session. Bila ramai2 orang shooting 1 couple, kena tarik perhatian dgn angkat tangan dan panggil nama untuk mendapatkan eye contact. Tapi yang ni saya angkat tangan dan point 1 direction untuk bagi couple tengok to that direction. Selalu mintak couple tgh 1 area yg cerah so then dalam portrait mereka ada light pada anak mata.

Hari Ibu Pertama tanpa Ibu

Jalan kat tempat rata pun 5 step dah penat (due to her chronic diabetis).

Masa tu galeri masih kosong. Tak ada apa2 dan emak cakap,

“Angah kerja kuat sangat, jangan kerja kuat sangat…mak bukan mintak harta banyak2, asalkan anak2 ingat emak pun dah cukup”.

Saya tanya…kenapa ayah nangis?? Ayah jawab…

“Dulu masa emak dgn ayah datang, ofis angah kosong. Sekarang dah banyak barang, ada meja, kerusi, ada pekerja dan macam2 lagi. Emak mesti suka tengok angah dah berjaya macam ni. Dulu masa kali pertama emak datang…masa dalam kereta emak tak berhenti2 berdoa supaya angah berjaya dgn business angah. Emak banyak doa kat anak2 dia yang tak lupa kat dia. Sekarang Angah dah berjaya…ayah sedih emak tak nampak berkat doa dia jadi kenyataan…”

Selamat hari ibu

(Setelah lama…hari ni, airmata jatuh lagi)

Got 1 Broke 1

My new baby, Canon 5D

I received a call from Canon last 2 days. My special camera arrived and they told me that I can collect it anytime. I was so excited to receive a new camera body. According to my history, 1 camera only last 1 year. Digital technology is different from the old analog technology. Old analog SLRs are mostly mechanical. They have no processor that become the most expensive part in a dSLR. I remember how i moved from d70 to d70s then d200 and converted to Canon with 30D and now slightly more in term of the features. Obviously, this Canon 5D is a fullframe camera. It’s not the top range camera. Some people asked me to buy the 1-series. Very often people told me this sentence “Angkat 1d mk III lah, u can afford that”. And normally i answered, “I’m a wedding photographer, not a sport shooters. No practical points driving a ferrari at Jalan Masjid India”. It’s not the matter weather we can afford or not. I just try to be practical.

I only need a camera as a tool of creativity. Not something that will create good photos on its own. Most of the people think, expensive camera will produce good photos. I don’t deny that but it’s not a major factor. When people asked me my unfavorite question “Camera apa SN pakai?” I normally answered them “My camera is my eyes and my eyes is my camera…but I use Canon system as a tool for capturing” <—kalau tak jawap nanti org cakap kita lokek pulak, tapi kita nak org tau camera tu cuma tools jer. Cap ayam pun boleh

Changing the camera every year for me and CandidSyndrome photographes is our tradition. That’s another way for us to ensure the quality of the pictures will not be dragged down by the system limitation. Hence, we upgrade a new and fresh camera every year. That’s why for most professional photographers, they lost in price. But they give u quality in return. By average I shoot 10,000++ images a month and about 120,000++ images a year. Talking about digital technology, most of the camera will end at 100,000 shuttercount. Then either they have to change the new shutter or buy a new camera. The costs for both aren’t far.

Oke, balik rumah with my new Canon 5D, then i suddenly became overexcited. I grabbed few lenses from my bag and drop my lovely Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens. It cost me RM250 (since i bought it 2nd hand) and this is one of the lenses that i love much (Owhh…in fact i only have 3 lenses jer, bukan byk pun. Now dah jadi 2 lah). It’s small and work really great with a fullframe body. Now…It’s BROKEN! Sedih betul. Takkan merajuk kot, bukan kita beli another lens 50mm pun.

My broken 50mm lens

Tak merasa lah 50mm ni ikut pergi Kuching. “She” (the 50mm) have been shortlisted pun untuk pergi Kuching for photography talk then pergi photohunting kat kawasan pedalaman Sarawak.

Kuching Talk

So welcoming! that’s what I said once i received this newspaper cutting from Zamrin (1 of the organisers). Probably this is the first invitation to give workshop / talk outside KL after Brunei Phototalk back in 2006. The photo on the paper taken 2 years ago. For those who want to see me with that cutting again…hmmm wait another 2 months. I’ll increase my gym visit frequency.

I’ll be heading to Kuching on Friday night. Thanks for the generous organiser for the brilliant room in Hilton (i didnt ask / demand about the class of my stay). I’m still comfortable flying on the “Red” airplane and stay at the place that will not burden anyone. It’s my passion to share some knowledge that I gain many2 years through sweat & tears. The charges merely to compensate my “Potential Cost” which I have to use my wedding hours where i should be earning something.

I love to see more photographers become professional. They live and work happily in photography. These are another 2 pieces of newspaper cutting related to the workshop. For those in Kuching, wait till i come there. There are lot of things to be shared.

Bila Photographer yg Jadi Subject

Picture of my wife and I under the tree near Notre Dam in Paris (Me…shy shy cat)

I have very strong passion to be behind the camera. For me, the joy of capturing those beautiful moments of other people are priceless experience. I can’t ask for more better job than what I’m doing now. Tapi bila dah biasa sangat ambik gambar, susah pulak nak berposing depan camera.

Ini gambar masa di Paris baru2 ni. My mother in law took this picture. I went to Paris to meet my agent for my exhibition that should be scheduled on May 2009 (If not end of 2009). We’ve been working together since 2 years ago without ever meet each other. That was the time that I have to see the exhibition venue by myself. So I’ll have better idea how to manage the space. So, I rate that trip as “BUSINESS TRIP” …because I have to work. Co-incidently, my mother-in-law visited my sister-in-law (pretty, bright and intelligent yet SINGLE) which still struggling to complete her Master program in Marine Law in Southampton. So “Mama” (My mom in law) was already there (in UK) for already a month. When they heard about the trip, then mama pun kena layan Adik (sis-in-law) yg tak pernah pergi Paris lagi. Rasanya kalau adik tau Paris tu hancing mesti adik pun taknak pergi Paris hehhehe.

So, they joined my wife and I in Paris. I arrived a day earlier. My wife came a day later (Due to some works my wife need to settle and some earlier scheduled meeting I need to attend). Now the story baru nak start kalau mama & adik plus my wife ada around me, then u can feel 50 metres walk seems toooooo long. Kejap2 berhenti nak ambil gambar. As usual, they can’t rely on my camera. Most of the pictures in my camera are landscapes.

I can’t be in front of camera. I feel like an idiot in the picture. I never feel good in the picture. Do u think this is normal as a photographer? Haiihhh…tak pandai betul. Balik dari Paris tu, i discovered I have less pictures of my wife, adik and mama in my camera. Surprisingly I have a lotttttt of pictures collected from their cameras hehehe…sorry ek 😀

In the next trip…I’ll be fair to others by shooting slightly more pictures of family than I shoot landscapes 😉
